Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin on Human Rights

The pursuit of human rights and justice is not an easy fete as demonstrated by the woes of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. The two professionals of the third estate were apprehended and placed under arrest in Maricopa by the area sheriff. Later the journalists sued for wrongful incarceration.

They were compensated after the court found that the county had erred in having them arrested. The journalists, who were compensated for the violation of human rights and dignities, decided to use their compensation amount to assist human rights groups in Arizona. The two journalists are behind the ‘Phoenix New Times Media’.

Arrested and For What

Jim Larkin and Mike Lacey wrote an exposé on ‘grand jury hearings’, being conducted secretly and at night. The purpose of the hearing was to recover all the publications made by the journalists casting aspersions on the character of the Sheriff.

The articles demonstrated the illegalities being propagated by the sheriff. It was the contention of the journalists that their audience, especially those who had read the articles, would be seized and punished. This violation was the primary reason they rushed to court for vindication.

Larkin and Lacey

Upon being compensated, these journalists decided to use their money to champion human rights. They established ‘Larkin and Lacey’, a foundation aimed at helping victims of abuse.

The foundation also partners with other organizations in the same line of human rights defense. Larkin and Lacey supports migrants and other civil rights champions.

‘Human Rights First’

Larkin and Lacey also works with ‘Human Rights First’. This organization is a fierce advocate of refugee rights. The organization contends that refugees suffer a lot as victims of violence and segregation in their own homes only to be exposed to human rights abuses where they seek refuge. The organization also deals with anti-Semitic and Islam issues.

The organization was in the frontline of defense for Muslims as they bore the wrath of American non-Muslims after 9/11. Darfur is a crisis that now occupies this organization’s attention. ‘Human Rights First’ was established in 1978 and based its offices in New York. Racial profiling is also another of the challenges that the organization deals with on a day to day basis.

 ‘Justice That Works’

Among the organizations that work with Larkin and Lacey is ‘Justice that Works’. The organization was started by Ayensa Millan, a brilliant immigration lawyer and radio personality, Mr. Viridana Hernandez and Mr. Heather Hamel.

Viridana is the director at ‘Center for Neighborhood Leadership’. ‘Justice that Works’, is an organization that is passionate about racial profiling cases as well as immigration rights.

Amnesty International

Another of the organizations that work with Larkin and Lacey is Amnesty International. This Non Governmental organization has been operational for many years, decades to be specific.

As a champion of human rights, particularly prisoner rights, it has been a dedicated soldier. The NGO was awarded in 1997 with the prestigious ‘Nobel Peace Prize’. In 1998, Amnesty International was awarded the ‘United Nation’s Prize in Human Rights’.
